Background of the Study
Misinformation has emerged as a formidable barrier to achieving high immunization coverage worldwide. In Bauchi State, the rapid spread of false information regarding vaccine safety, efficacy, and necessity has significantly influenced public perceptions and contributed to vaccine hesitancy. Social media platforms, local gossip, and informal community networks often serve as the primary channels for disseminating such misinformation, which can distort the truth and instill unwarranted fear among parents and caregivers (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).
In Bauchi State, misinformation about immunization is frequently fueled by rumors and unverified claims that exaggerate side effects or suggest that vaccines contain harmful substances. This has led to a decline in immunization uptake, as many parents opt to forgo vaccination for their children based on erroneous beliefs. The problemis compounded by the lack of robust, evidence-based communication from trusted sources, which leaves a vacuum filled by misleading narratives. Consequently, vaccine-preventable diseases continue to pose a significant threat to public health, undermining years of progress in immunization coverage (Chukwu, 2024).
Understanding the sources and impact of misinformation is critical for developing effective strategies to combat it. This study aims to investigate how misinformation influences immunization coverage in Bauchi State, identify the primary channels through which false information spreads, and assess its overall impact on vaccine uptake. By employing a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative analysis of immunization data with qualitative interviews of community members and health professionals, the research seeks to offer a comprehensive overview of the misinformation landscape. The ultimate goal is to provide actionable recommendations for public health authorities to counteract misinformation and restore confidence in immunization programs (Ogunleye, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In Bauchi State, the proliferation of misinformation has emerged as a critical factor contributing to low immunization coverage. Despite the availability of vaccines, false narratives and unverified claims circulating in communities have led to widespread skepticism about vaccine safety and efficacy. This misinformation has created significant barriers to vaccine acceptance, resulting in lower immunization rates and increased vulnerability to vaccine-preventable diseases (Lawal, 2023).
The challenge is further exacerbated by the absence of effective countermeasures and proactive communication from healthcare authorities. The current public health messaging often fails to reach the affected populations in a timely and culturally appropriate manner, leaving room for rumors and misinformation to spread unchecked. As a result, parents and caregivers are making vaccination decisions based on inaccurate information, which not only compromises individual health but also threatens herd immunity. The persistent impact of misinformation undermines public confidence in immunization programs and complicates efforts to control disease outbreaks.
This study seeks to fill the research gap by systematically examining the impact of misinformation on immunization coverage in Bauchi State. It will investigate the sources, channels, and content of misinformation, and correlate these factors with immunization data. Addressing this problemis crucial for designing targeted interventions that can effectively counteract misinformation, improve public understanding of vaccine benefits, and ultimately enhance immunization coverage.
